Homebush Station Upgrade
Originally built in 1855 as part of the first railway line in Sydney, Homebush Station is widely considered as the most intact heritage listed station in the Sydney network. As part of the NSW-wide Transport Access Program (TAP) DesignInc provided architectural services to upgrade Homebush Station to be accessible, modern and welcoming.
A key challenge was to maintain the existing character of the site while meeting contemporary accessibility, egress and wayfinding requirements. Our solution was to create a seamlessly blended design, integrating the design language of the heritage components into the new structures.
Upgrades include new lifts, canopies for weather protection, improvements to station entrances lighting and CCTV surveillance, and wayfinding signage. Connections to surrounding streetscape were enhanced through upgraded interchange areas and bicycle facilities as well as a new pedestrian crossing on Loftus Street.
