Campbelltown Library
When the $8 million refurbishment of Campbelltown City Council’s municipal library opened to the public, it provided an immediate increase in visitor rates by as much as 2000 people per week. DesignInc transformed the 1980s building into a vibrant, contemporary facility that reflects the shift from the traditional lending model of libraries to a functional community space as borrowers seek additional comforts and amenities.
The refurbished library is double the size of the original library and incorporates multi-user spaces for people of all ages. A key design challenge of the project was creating a series of staged works that would enable the facility to remain operational during the construction program. The children’s library incorporates a striking ‘magic tree’ feature for storytelling that sets this facility apart from other community libraries. The tree uses high-quality audio-visual elements, creating up to 14 different effects, from starry nights to bright pink ripples, with music and sounds effects like birdsong. A new youth area incorporates a quiet study area and a relaxed lounge where young users are free to talk, listen to music and watch television.
