Arncliffe Station Upgrade

A train moving under the pedestrian access bridge and past the platform

As part of the NSW-wide Transport Access Program (TAP), DesignInc provided architectural services for the upgrade of the Arncliffe Station and surrounding urban area to be accessible, welcoming and connected.

Lightly touching heritage

To complement the significant heritage of the existing station, upgrades were designed to be raw and honest, differentiating the new from the old. Construction techniques and material selection include exposed steel, off-form concrete.

The view from the platform to the pedestrian access bridge over the line and new lift access from the platforms

Upgrades to the station include new lifts and upgraded stairs to all platforms, new canopies providing shelter from weather, and accessible toilets. Safe and enjoyable multi-modal transport is encouraged through new pedestrian linkages to adjacent streets, bicycle parking and access paths, landscaping, commuter car parking, bus shelters, taxi stands, kiss and ride locations and bicycle facilities. In addition, a new tunnel was constructed on the north side of the Allen Street vehicle underpass.

The innovative structure for Concourse Road utilises the new lifts as their main support, allowing no new weight onto the heritage listed iron bridge support trestles.
