Abbotsford Social Housing
Abbotsford Social Housing is a medium density affordable rental housing development in Sydney’s Inner West. This government project provides high quality affordable housing for a range of low and middle income households in an otherwise unaffordable location.
Abbotsford is one of six sites comprising a mix of 88 universal and accessible one-and-two bedroom residences. The low-rise apartment buildings use strategic devices such as sun shading and balcony screens, winter-gardens and private communal open space to bring privacy and amenity to residents. Natural earth colours and a mix of masonry with lightweight materials for upper levels, helps softens the building profile in harmony with the neighbourhood.
Key sustainable design features include reverse brick construction, solar hot water and power generation. Layouts feature kitchen areas which face the street, encouraging social interaction between neighbours, a design initiative to combat loneliness caused by social isolation.
