Oatley Train Station

The brief for renewing this small railway station in southern Sydney called for a new lift and stair access to station platforms from two streets, as well as new station forecourts, an accessible toilet, improved weather protection to the platforms. Other upgrades to the interchange included parking for taxis, buses, bikes and cars, improved lighting, CCTV surveillance, new way-finding signage and landscaping.

For a project that’s all about journeys, we made the footbridge a great arrival experience. The perforated aluminium walls deliver a wonderful light play, and the balcony at the end of the footbridge looks out to the district.

The big innovation for this station—the curved steel truss of its footbridge—was driven by heritage requirements. Ribbed concrete components were precast off site, then transported and assembled. The footbridge, including its screening walls of perforated aluminium, was assembled in an adjacent park and the complete structure dramatically craned into position.

3D visualisation tools were used to illustrate the process to stakeholders, and the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage. The result is a strong contemporary structure in harmony with the existing heritage station.
