DesignInc’s commitment to sustainability was celebrated with Redfern Station and PHIVE receiving accolades for their innovative, inclusive, and environmentally conscious designs at the 2024 Sustainability Awards and the World Green Building Council’s Sustainable Design and Performance Awards.

DesignInc’s sustainability agenda has been further recognised, with two projects receiving an award and commendation at the 2024 Sustainability Awards and the World Green Building Council’s Sustainable Design and Performance Awards consecutively.

Redfern Station received an award in the ‘Landscape and Urban’ Category at the Sustainability Awards, which was hosted by Australian publication, Architecture & Design at Sydney Town Hall in mid-November. Redfern Station was also shortlisted in Adaptive Reuse and Public Buildings Categories; Towradgi Station (designed in collaboration with Nguluway DesignInc) too was shortlisted in Public Buildings and Landscape and Urban categories.

The major Sydney transport hub was upgraded as part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program, emphasising inclusivity, connectivity and sustainability. A new southern concourse and entrances at Little Eveleigh and Marian Streets headline upgrades, integrating high-quality amenities while respecting the natural, cultural and built heritage. The project, which achieved an Excellent Design IS Rating by the Infrastructure Sustainability Council, aligns with NSW’s low-carbon future goals by integrating a strong adaptive reuse agenda while improving active transport connections to, and through, the site.

PHIVE—Parramatta Civic Hub received global recognition that same week, this time a ‘Highly Commended’ at the World Green Building Council’s Leadership in Sustainable Design and Performance Award in the ‘Institutional’ category. This becomes PHIVE’s ninth commendation or award since the project was built.

The six-level PHIVE building is home to Parramatta library, Council Chambers and workplace, and an array of community facilities—including multi-functional events and cultural spaces. Green Building Council of Australia awarded it a 6 Star Green Star Design & As Built certification in February and now PHIVE has broadened its global recognition as a world leading community building.

DesignInc Principal and sustainability lead, Paul Wallace, said:

“PHIVE and Redfern Station are the epitome of what we at DesignInc strive for: designing places that people want to use and like using. Places that enable vibrant lifestyles. Places that are functional but at the end of the day, are enjoyable and contribute to the positive wellbeing of our cities and their people. Congratulations to the clients, project teams, and other successful entrants to the respective programs.”

Sustainability is balancing different and conflicting needs—environmental, social and economic—in pursuit of harmony. That means, looking after the planet and its people, and understanding that we are connected to all things; to each other, the planet, natural systems, and man-made systems like economies and cities.
