Design for people, place and planet—Introducing our ESD Framework

Research / Culture / News / Sustainable

This World Environment Day, DesignInc Sydney is proud to unveil our updated Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) Framework—part of our commitment to a sustainable future where environmental protection, social equity and economic wellbeing coexists.

Leveraging industry-leading research and best practice implementation, the framework is built around a number of sustainable design principles ranging from Designing with Country, to Circular Design, Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA), Regenerative Design, Adaptive Reuse and Inclusivity/Accessibility. The framework also exists as an education tool for DesignInc Sydney staff, championing accountability to best practice sustainable design.

The ESD Framework complements DesignInc’s recent achievement of dual Climate Active certification, which certifies both our Services and Organisation. At present, DesignInc is the only architecture practice in Australia to hold Climate Active certification for Services.

The built environment accounts for approximately 40% of carbon emissions globally and about 50% of resources used are for buildings and fitouts (World Green Building Council, Global Status Report, 2019). As such, the framework can be applied to all project typologies, and seeks out opportunities to enhance a site or community’s sustainability credentials through design intervention.

DesignInc Principal and Sustainability Lead, Paul Wallace, said:

“As designers, we recognise we have a key role to play and responsibility to improve the sustainability credentials of the projects we design. We need to think about every project in terms of sustainability and DesignInc’s Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) Framework has been developed as a guide to help educate and inform our staff of sustainable design principles and strategies that can be used to develop design solutions that are good for people and good for the planet.”

Ultimately sustainable design is simply about good design – spaces and places need to be well-used and well-loved.

‘Through implementing these strategies and by using tools that measure embodied carbon in our designs, we’re able to minimise adverse environmental impacts and accelerate the shift to low embodied carbon and net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment.

The framework explores real-world examples of sustainable design by DesignInc, including:

Design principles are a centre point for all DesignInc disciplines—architecture, urban design, interior design and landscape architecture—to come together in support of resilient, multidisciplinary design.
