Connecting Sydney—Draft Western Harbour Tunnel PDLP released

Landscaped pedestrian and active transport connections are a key feature of draft plans.

The Western Harbour Tunnel draft Place, Design and Landscape Plan (PDLP) has been released to the public, capturing the breadth of the design work undertaken across the 6.5-kilometre twin tunnels spanning Rozelle to Cammeray and beneath Sydney Harbour.

DesignInc Sydney are proud to be a part of the design delivery team with ACCIONA, Aurecon, AECOM, BG&E, IE Group, Hatch, Cultural Capital and Transport for NSW. The team have spent the past two years providing integrated architectural, urban design, interior design, and landscape architecture services for this transformative project.

Scope includes design of ventilation facilities, greenspace and parkland development along the corridor and at temporary construction sites and design of road features, including retaining and noise walls, tunnel portals and tunnel cladding. Works prioritise Designing from Country outcomes which been co-developed with key stakeholders.

DesignInc Sydney Project Manager and Lead Designer, Michael Kahn, said:

‘Western Harbour Tunnel demonstrates how transformative major infrastructure projects can be for the community through the creation of great, connected public spaces.

‘Among our favourite design outcomes are the tunnel ‘events’, co-designed with Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay artist Dennis Golding, detailed within the PDLP, and the new green link of the Ernest Street Bridge.

‘We’re excited to continue our design role on the next two phases of work to provide public parklands at Berrys Bay and Cammeray Park. We look forward to continued realisation of this mega project that will reshape the way Sydneysiders move through the city and create public amenity through public domain enhancements.’

Western Harbour Tunnel PDLP is open for feedback now, and is on display until 28 August 2024.
