Byron Bay Interchange Access Upgrade
The Transport Access Program (TAP) is NSW-wide upgrade of key sites across the transport network to be accessible, modern and welcoming.
Byron Bay is a flourishing regional area with a fast-growing local population and ever-increasing tourist patronage. To meet the transport needs associated with this growth, Byron Bay has been identified as one of a number of locations across NSW for a regional transport interchange: the project has planning approval and is due to start construction in 2020. DesignInc is providing urban design, architectural and landscape services for the upgrade, which aims to offer a comfortable and safe transport experience for the local community as well as interstate and intercity visitors. Facilities—including shelters, toilets, a kiosk, carparks, pedestrian plaza, taxi and coach areas and a pedestrian and bicycle green-link—are connected through soft and hard landscaping. Stakeholder consultation identified the importance of a heritage-listed water tower on the site to the local community, so it has been integrated as a feature into the design.
