St Vincent’s Institute is an independent research body affiliated with St Vincent’s Health and the University of Melbourne. Through these links its research programs provide valuable services to clinical medicine, graduate education and community welfare.
The 4 storey extension to the Institute houses new research laboratories, support infrastructure, ground floor offices and conference facilities. The existing Nicholson Street terrace was refurbished and connected to the new extension.
The key design challenge for the new extension concerned appropriate integration with the existing building. This was achieved through a simple facade design, incorporating a feature corner stair to Nicholson and Princes Street to mark a transition of scale between the terrace and hospital buildings.
This integrated development responds positively to the street and Carlton Gardens creating a contemporary identity and entry point to the Institute.
