This project created a new home for South Australia’s Rescue Helicopter Service. The ‘Raison D’etre’ of the facility is that a Rescue Helicopter can be airborne within 10 minutes of receiving an emergency dispatch; day or night; rain, hail or shine.
The building includes a multi-aircraft hangar, offices, a maintenance section, training facilities and sleeping quarters for crew members.
The public face of the building is a juxtaposition of strongly coloured boxes. The hangar, whilst simpler in colour (it had to be white so as to not interfere with the airport radar) and form, still manages to subtly evoke the geometry of a helicopter tail and fin.
