The design of MLC Junior School year 3-6 building completed the creation of a new junior school precinct. Strategic retention and refurbishment of part of the existing junior school provided a “recycling” strategy that was carried through to the design philosophy of the new parts of the building.
The existing building was visually combined with the new building to create three building zones. The existing south administration building was used to house smaller administration areas and the larger library and art rooms, both with fixed layouts which could be accommodated within existing structure and columns.
A new northern building combined 12 large, flexible classrooms and a music Hall for flexible teaching use. A naturally ventilated linking breakout space between old and new provides opportunity for impromptu learning and interaction and emphasises a new landscape connection between the senior school to the west and the Lofts Avenue main entry to the east.
Many energy, material and water saving strategies have been integrated into this flexible learning environment which has come to be known by the students as “the big cubby house”.
