Geoscience Australia

The Geoscience Australia facility is an energy efficient collection of offices, laboratories, stores and workshops. The flexible plan successfully integrates the various spaces to create a unified whole, encouraging a collaborative work environment.

Staff interaction is enhanced by half level access to related laboratory and office areas within the low rise 3 storey building. Covered internal courtyards and a pedestrian ‘street’ with open staircases help to create visual links between floors.

Geosicence Australia is recognised as a leader in ESD design, winning several design and environmental awards.

The facility has a compact, well insulated building envelope and a low ratio of external wall to gross floor area. With the primary facades oriented north-south, passive sun control system minimises solar loads. These elements are assisted by sealed double glazed windows and skylights.

Illumination is constant, achieved through a mix of natural and artificial light. Interstitial floors in laboratory areas are future proofed by offering maximum flexibility. The building services included Australia’s largest geothermal heat pump air-conditioning system at the time of completion.
