DesignInc was engaged by the City of Burnside to deliver a much-needed refurbishment of the George Bolton Swimming Centre Burnside. Built in 1966, and located within the heritage listed Hazelwood Park, the open air swimming pools are surrounded by significant native vegetation and are a unique and important asset for the local community.
A significant facelift was required to ensure the centre would maintain its relevance and continue to be a major community asset into the future.
The existing building was completely renovated, with rundown canopies removed and the roof line extended to create a new entry statement and a much larger undercover area. A modern plant room was designed to service all renovated pools, including a 50m lap pool, a learn-to-swim pool and a beach-entry toddler pool. A new splash pad with fixed pool toys was created to entertain young children, who make up a large number of the centre’s patrons.
As part of the project, the newly built works are connected to the recently renovated playground nearby, encouraging increased use of the pool while also helping drive business to the centre’s kiosk.
