Campbelltown Leisure Centre
ARC Campbelltown saw the reimagining of an ageing leisure centre in northeast Adelaide, to reflect the diversity of today’s personal fitness and sporting cultures.
Over four years, DesignInc and Campbelltown City Council collaborated to expand the project scope in line with community support.
The transformation includes the three original multipurpose courts for basketball, netball, badminton, volleyball and soccer, reborn with new-technology flooring, scoring and lighting, and increased spectator seating.
New facilities include the aquatic centre with lap swimming and learning pools, a gym and studios for dance and aerobics, a cafe, crèche, event space and change facilities.
Campbelltown City Council
Since reopening in July 2016, the ARC has achieved stronger than forecast membership numbers and Learn to Swim enrolments, with Centre memberships currently at triple the projected levels.
The new aquatic facilities were a major focus of the renewal, with a variety of water spaces allowing for continuous use by all age groups. The Learn to Swim pool, for instance, caters to specialised classes with a dedicated children's splash pad and separate indoor heated lap pool.
Site constraints led to an extremely efficient plan resolution, with much of the expanded building footprint (around five times the original) excavated into the steep site, minimising its impact.
Best practice materials include the engineered timber court floors and high-tech squash court walling systems. Natural light is a feature of the public spaces, and key facilities now include:
- 25 metre indoor lap pool
- 15 metre indoor Learn to Swim pool
- six international size squash courts
- multi-purpose five-court stadium
- court-view function centre
- aerobics/dance studios
- training and rehab gym
- community meeting rooms
- cafe, crèche and change facilities
