Adelaide Entertainment Centre
Redevelopment of the old Adelaide Entertainment Centre (AEC) included creating a signature domed forecourt and foyer for a new entry, and a new multipurpose theatre of significantly greater capacity. It also included reorienting pedestrian and vehicle traffic to the greatly expanded new venue that is Adelaide’s premier space for staging cultural and sporting events on a grand scale.
The orb entry dome uses the same material and technique as the Water Cube in Beijing, designed for the 2008 Olympic Games. The dome comprises 140 translucent ‘pillows’ from two sheets of EFTE heat-welded and clamped together. An LED lighting system beneath the dome projects patterns of light and colour.

A remade cultural venue in Adelaide with an iconic presence for performance and sporting events
Redevelopment of AEC involved demolition of the existing Rubicon Function Room and courtyard, the circular colonnade to the plaza, and significant alterations to the Alchemy courtyard and main arena entry canopy, to make way for the new dome and the Theatre performance space.
Two critical elements in the upscaling were improvements to pedestrian safety, and the visual integration of way-finding signage through various parts of the public interface. A driveway to Port Road was removed, improving, and a new VIP vehicle drop-off incorporated into the ‘pixelated’ paving, signalling it as a pedestrian zone.
A suite of major new signage elements, based on AEC’s existing brand elements, were deployed as pedestrian way-finding beacons for each zone.
‘Lanterns’ illuminated with multi-colour lighting signal the entries to the Theatre, while linking in with the entry dome, where the LED lighting system can produce thousands of colours in hundreds of pattern combinations. These systems include advanced LED ‘neon’ signage that reduces running costs and increases signage lifespan.
